Born in Ambala in 1964, Chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s journey began with a childhood marked by transitions. His father’s job at the State Bank of India took the family to various cities, including Delhi, Meerut, Saharanpur, and back to Delhi. Sanjeev attended different schools during these relocations, including St. Thomas School in Meerut and St. Mary’s Academy in Saharanpur. In Delhi, he lived in Rajouri Garden and attended a model Government School from 9th to 12th grade.

Education Choices and Career Beginnings

Sanjeev Kapoor’s educational path diverged from the mainstream early on. Opting for Sanskrit instead of Hindi in 9th grade showcased his penchant for standing out. His interest in biology led him to consider a career in medicine initially. However, a pivotal moment during an engineering drawing class steered him away from conventional paths. Encouraged by a friend, Sanjeev applied for hotel management, a decision that would reshape his future.

Hotel Management Journey

Joining the Pusa Institute of Hotel Management in Delhi, Sanjeev embarked on a journey that would define his career. Despite initial confusion between pursuing architecture or hotel management, he chose the latter, drawn by its creativity and uniqueness. His training included diverse experiences, from catering for the 1982 Asian Games to campus competitions and campus placements.

Sanjeev Kapoor’s career trajectory soared as he showcased his culinary prowess. Recognized early on for his talent, he became the executive chef at the Hotel Varanasi Ashok at a young age. His achievements included being nominated and subsequently winning awards for the Best Executive Chef of the country, setting new standards in the industry.

Television and Entrepreneurship

The launch of Zee TV presented a turning point in Sanjeev’s career. Asked to host a cookery show, he played a pivotal role in creating the iconic “Khana Khazana,” which garnered immense popularity and continues to endure. This success paved the way for his entrepreneurship, including the launch of Sanjeev Kapoor’s Khana Khazana line of ready-to-cook meals.

Personal Life and Recognition

Sanjeev Kapoor’s personal life intertwined with his professional journey. His move to Mumbai led to marriage with Alyona, marking a new chapter in his life. Alongside his culinary achievements, he received numerous awards and honors, including being named Best Executive Chef of India and receiving the Mercury Gold Award in Geneva.

As the brand ambassador for Sweekar Advanced and a member of Singapore Airlines’ International Culinary Panel, he continues to shape the culinary landscape in India and beyond.
